Josh,
Mark believes that mayoral control is necessary to implement a city-wide plan for our public schools. Mark applauds the mayor's efforts to break-up failing schools, and create new, smaller ones with a clear initiative and focus, among other endeavors.
Still, it seems that the parents are being left out of the process. Mark believes that the parents themselves have the biggest influence on their child's education and know better than anyone what their child needs to succeed in school. The city needs a bottom-up approach to education, rather than top-down. Right now, there is little recourse for a parent trying to correct a problem with their child's education, and with the elimination of local school boards, those in charge seem insulated from the wishes of parents.
As Public Advocate, Mark will be a strong counterweight to the mayor, and hold him accountable to the needs of parents.
Thanks,
Tom
