Helping to fix our economic condition

This post authored by Alan, from zipcode 11375

Waste in government is at an all time high because those in office like to stay in office an use the taxpayer money to do so. In times like these, we should be on aueterity budget which only means we should spend the money we have to and not spend on extras. It is time for no one in New York City and New York State to have ANY discretionary funds. Paying for concerts is not needed right now. Paying for parties is not needed right now. Giving money away to organizations so they can "reach out to the community" is not needed right now. Paying for education, health, police, fire, sanitation, and infrastructure, that is what is needed. If our entire government would only "govern" and not get involved in any personal and narrow issues, we could fix the economy much faster. Mark, I know that as far as NYC you can stand up to those who waste our money better than anyone else. That is why you have my support.

Alan,

Thanks for your thoughts and support. Some discretionary spending is necessary to serve communities that council members were elected to represent. But as is also happening in DC, the process awarding such monies must be far more transparent and free of conflicts of interest. As Public Advocate, I will highlight wasteful spending when I see it, especially given the priorities that you describe in your thoughtful post.

Mark
